How to locate files with a specified file extension using DOS commands only?

Windows 10 has developed a critical error and, following the assessment of an expert technician, I have been advised to reinstall.   The process will remove all apps but preserve my files which are, in any event, backed up daily.   I am not sure if the reinstall will erase Outlook's pst files and I'm not sure if I included them in my daily backup routine.  I really don't want to risk losing all my archived emails.   I am, therefore, looking to find these files on my Dell Inspiron PC's hard drive and save them to an external hard drive before I initiate the Windows 10 reinstall.   I thought my PC's hard drive was partitioned into C and D drives only but when I enter the DOS window the default drive is X.   I have tried searching for files with *.pst extensions within these three drives using DOS dir or find commands but am unable to locate then.   I can't find the directories for Word or Excel files either, for that matter.    I assume they are hidden in some way.   Can anyone suggest a means of finding files stored anywhere on the hard drive in my PC, whether hidden or not, using only DOS commands?


Machine loses WiFi connection

The laptop has no problem with the network/internet with Ethernet. However, unplug the cable the laptop requires frequent 'Network Reset' under Network Status. After the machine resets, prompts for key, it reconnects with the network/internet.

Distance from the router is not an issue.

latitude e7450 ssd failure, under guarantee, Dell refuses to acknowledge data loss

Hi, We have a dell latitude e7450 still under guarantee. The ssd failed (no boot volume)  so we sent it in to Dell for repair and, if required, data recovery. The diagnostics say the hard drive is good, so it appears that the MBR is bad but not the ssd itself? Dell have come back saying that they want to reformat the ssd or return the machine in its current state (unusable) so that we can -- according to Dell -- recover the data ourselves (how?) This doesn't make sense to me. When I complained that Dell should not use ssds that fail within 2 years of (mild) use, the Dell rep told me the only thing defective were customers who failed to back up their data. While it is true that there should be a way to create a bootable backup of the data, and I've tried using Dell's backup solution without success, it remains the case that the problem arose due to faulty Dell design/product choice etc etc. So I guess I am asking Dell to pull up their socks, own the problem and send us a restored working computer, but also asking the forum if they believe the Dell rep  when they said we could restore the data or are the ssds toast? We were also told the technical team has been looking at the problem but it required more testing and, two days later, our data is gone... Thanks for your advice.

YOU'LL NEED THE RECOVERY TOOLS ON YOUR INSTALLATION MEDIA.  IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY INSTALLATION MEDIA [LIKE A DISC OR USB DEVICE] CONTACT YOUR SYSTEM ADMIN OR PC MANUFACTURER.

CAN SOMEONE TELL ME WHAT THIS MEANS AND WHAT TO DO IN THE MOST BASIC TERMS?  DOES THIS MEAN MY FILES ARE NOT RECOVERABLE?

THE LAPTOP DID NOT COME WITH AN INSTALLATION DISC.

Wrong driver for Intel 8260/7265/7260/3165/3160 WiFi Driver

I used dell to detect my system and then recommend drivers.  It recommended an update for my Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260.  My current driver is version 18.33.3.2.  Dell recommended an update to 18.40.0.9. However, the file that actually downloaded is for version 18.20.0.9 (Network_Driver_VJY7Y_WN32_18.20.0.9_A01.EXE - this is how it shows in my windows explorer).  I guess it could just be a mislabeling by someone and it is the newest version.  But the system detects that it is at least listed as being older than my current version and stops the install. 

Dell should correct this.  Do you know if there is actually an update to my version?  Link to driver page below:

Dell Inspiron 7000 won't recognise Dell U2412M Monitor on Windows 10?

I have just bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 15.6" Laptop

...and I want to use my Dell u2412M monitor, to extend the screens for my workspace ( or simply use the bigger monitor screen).

To achieve this I am using an HDMI cable with an HDMI to DVI adaptor to plug the cable into the Dell monitor.

I've tested the cable on my old Sony laptop using HDMI to DVI and it recognises the monitor and works (my other laptop was running Windows 7).

However the new laptop won't recognise or see the monitor at all when I plug in the HDMI cable?

I have checked under "manage my devices" and the graphics card driver seems up to date on the laptop.

Is there something I need to download to make the monitor work please as I assumed it would plug and play.

How to disable battery warning on boot up?

I recently bought a battery for my Inspiron 17r se 7720 laptop running windows 10. When I boot it up, it gives a warning saying this battery isn't recommended. How can I disable that warning?

My laptop will not power on.  The charger has a green LED lit up so I assume it's working.  I tried the steps in the troubleshooter.  I disconnected the battery and held the power button down for 20-30 seconds, reconnected the battery, plugged in the charger but it still does not power on.  If I hold the power button down, an orange light lights up for about 2 seconds and then goes away.  Any help would be appreciated.

I have connected an HDMI cable to the new Dell laptop which runs windows 10

I have inserted an DVI to HDMI adapter into the monitor and plugged in the HDMI cable.

(I want to extend my workspace on my laptop onto the monitor).

I've tested the set up of the cable and adapter using another laptop running Windows 7 and it all works fine.

However, my new Dell laptop does not seem to recognize the Dell monitor.

Please can you advise solution/s?

When I try to press the power button, the Laptop makes a short whistle like Noise and shuts down with a 'tuck' sound. I tried draining static power but it didn't work. Am not even getting Dell logo screen.What might be the problem and if I go to the repair shop How much they might charge?

My laptop got suddenly turn off without any warning and when trying turning ON  it wont show windows logo but got 3 beeps so tried to click the power button to turn OFF and later it won't even power on my LED's won't even glow and I'm out of warranty please help me..


Gigabit Ethernet on Dell SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Docking Station failed

I have a setup with a home office and a work office in which I have a Dell SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Docking Station at each location.  Mysteriously about two to three weeks ago the Dell Gigabit Ethernet connection on BOTH docs just stopped working - it briefly connects, tries to identify the network and then shows no connection.

The laptop is an XPS 15 but to debug I also tried a Latitude E5470 - both laptops act the same way on both docks.  On the XPS 15 I updated all of the drivers from Dell and Intel.   TCP stack reset, adapters deleted and re-added, etc, etc.

When the Ethernet is connected directly to the latitude it works just fine at both locations.

I called Dell support and was told if the Ethernet works on the Latitude then I have to go back to the retailer where I bought the dock and ask them how to fix it because the dock and the laptop are out of support [I offered to pay but was told that the dock isn't covered regardless]... STUPIDEST TECH SUPPORT RESPONSE EVER (and I'm in tech support myself so I've heard it all) for multiple reasons as noted above - two docks and two laptops.

At roughly the same time the WiFi throughput on the XPS built-in adapter dropped to kbps speeds (well documented but no real solution - google "dell Wireless-N 7260 performance issues").

On the XPS I even upgraded from Win 8.1 to Win 10 to see if a "fresh" OS would flush out any bad drivers, etc - no help, same issue.

The only workarounds I found were : 

- used USB3 Gigabit adapters on both docks.  NOTE : after you get the external adapter connected, you can move the Eth cable back to the Dell Eth port and it works!  But, the next time you plug and unplug the doc, it reverts back to failure.

- removed the latest Intel drivers for the 7260 WiFi and let the OS load the default Microsoft drivers.  Speed on the Wifi jumps from about 2mbps to 60mpbs or more depending on the wifi network.

I know there has to be a solution somewhere but to the best of my ability I have tried everything I know.  I am missing something - can anyone help??

Refund for XPS 13 Lemon?

I bought a XPS 13 three months ago, started using it about two and half months ago. Last week the USB-C port stopped working. The tech support guy I chatted with said that it needs a new motherboard. He set up an onsite visit for a tech to install the new motherboard.

The tech came by yesterday. By the end of the day, my problems went from bad to worse. I'm in this loop of entering my Windows 10 Bitlocker code and being sent to a bunch of troubleshooting options that do nothing. I can't even reset from the recovery partition.

The best diagnosis was that the new motherboard was a dud, so I'm left with the original. Not having a working USB-C port seems like a much smaller problem now that I can't even boot up.

They're going to send another motherboard for another onsite tech visit. My other option was sending my computer out for repair in "three to five business days" starting Tuesday. I need a working computer in order to pursue my livelihood. It's hard to contemplate wiping out a week of work, so I went with the faster onsite visit, even though I'm not confident that I will have a working laptop afterward.

The best suggestion I was left with was to buy another hard drive in hopes of saving the contents of the built-in one that I have no access to right now. I don't see the point of sinking more money into a laptop that stopped working in under three months.

At this point, I feel like I've wasted $2,000 of my family's money and tons of time on a computer that's a lemon. I want to get out of the Dell game. Does anyone know how I can pursue a refund?

Error in Dell Outlet XPS 9560 does NOT have 1050Ti

Please note that several of the Dell XPS 9560 units being sold on dell.com are misrepresented as having the higher performing nVidia 1050ti graphics chip.

That is wrong and confirmed by phone with Dell as an error. Dell has not yet fixed the errors. There is no way the laptop has the power for that chip.

Most 9560 units have the nVidia 1050 and a few seem to have just onboard Intel graphics.

Precision M4800 Power Switch does not work

I have a real stumper.  The power button does not function.  Will not turn on the laptop. I set the bios to power on with A/C, so I can get it to power on by unplugging and replugging the power cord.    When Window has power switch set  to sleep or to shut down -- it does not.  Holding the power switch down will not shutdown the laptop. 

I installed the latest bios from the support pages.  I replaced the CMOS battery.  I replaced the power switch. While I had it opened up I checked for loose connections, debris, dirt, etc.   At least to the point I had access (I did not open beyond removing the palm rest to get to the power switch).

Everything else on the laptop seems to work just fine.  Not sure what to do next with this.  Sad part is this started about 4 weeks after the Dell service expired.
