Office Starter is ad-supported - it won't run properly without an Internet connection (so the ads can be displayed).
If you don't want that, you'll need to purchase Office (or uninstall it an use one of the free office suites -- Open Office, etc.).
For a basic home user, Open Office will do just fine, and has no need for ad support.
