XPS-15 finally OK

We used to complain about Dell problems and I am not an exception. But also understand that behind that there are engineers that do a hard work to keep things running.

So it seemed right to post not only for problems but also to say thank you: today I personally can state I am happy of XPS 15 and WD-15. It was not easy to arrive here but finally I have nothing to complain and all the problems I have found are solved.

Thank you Dell and engineers!

E4310, Won't start. Now power/No lights

Hoping this is a simple issue.  I have an E4310 that will not power up even it only on AC power.  When the adapter is plugged in there is no indication that the battery is charging.   With the adapter in I can press the on/off button, get a blue light and an amber light on the battery light but them it shuts off.  On battery only I get nothing.  I've tried more than on known good AC adapter.  Same results.

Its seems as if the laptop as last run on battery until the battery completely discharged and now it won't charge at all or fire up on AC power.

Was looking for any advice before I start to tear this thing apart.

Dell XPS13 audio jack wont fit my headphones

I just received a new Dell XPS13 non-touch. Everything about it is great except that my standard Skullcandy headphones will not fit into the audio jack. Nor will my earbuds. Furthermore, I seem to be the only one complaining about this since no one else has posted about this being a problem for them. What can I do? I know that my headphones have a standard size jack.

Clean installation of Windows 8.1 using ISO image from Dell support site question

Hi all, Ive followed the instructions given to me by Tech support and gone to the link listed under my Service Tag where there is the option to download my Windows 8.1 ISO image along with instructions which Ive printed off.

I will be installing from a USB flash drive and the instructions to create the bootable USB installation media are straight forward and easy to follow using Diskpart. Then simply Mount the image and copy all files over onto the USB flash drive.

Im a little confused though when reading the instructions under How to Reinstall Windows 8.1. there are two options PCs with BIOS boot mode and PCs with UEFI boot mode. I purchased my Inspiron laptop late 2015 so it has UEFI boot mode with Secure Boot. Under the UEFI boot instructions it talks about disabling Secure Boot and for USB installation media set Boot order to Internal ODD device. I don't understand..a USB flash drive isnt an Internal ODD device as far as im aware.

So without doing anything to System Setup Ive tried inserting a flash drive, tapping F12. It says UEFI boot mode and Secure Boot is enabled and the flash drive is listed second one down underneath my Toshiba hard disc. It seems to me that I have to follow the instructions for PCs with BIOS boot mode even though my system is UEFI boot mode!! Am I missing something here?

Dell XPS 15 9550 sleep issue

I have sleep issues with my Dell XPS 15 9550 laptop with Windows 10. I have set the laptop to turn off display and go to sleep after 10 minutes, both on battery and when plugged in. When I leave the laptop for 10 minutes, the display turns off correctly but the laptop does not go to sleep.

My BIOS is up-to-date. The laptop correctly goes to sleep when closing the lid or using the Windows start menu - it is only time-based sleep that is not working.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Upgrade from i7-2760QM 2.4 ghz to extreme processor i7-2960XM 2.7 Ghx Latitude E6420

Hi,

I have a i7-2760QM 2.4 ghz processor in a Dell E6420.  I confirmed on CPU world that the i7-2960XM 2.7GHz processor will fit in the board.  Has anyone upgraded their board and processor to a better faster configuration for an E6420.  I can't afford to replace the machine right now but may want to boost processing speed.  Your input will be most appreciated.

Dell Alienware 15R3/17R4 are you affected by the extremely hot CPU disease?

Apperently a lot of Dell Alienware 15R3 / 17 R4 with the i7 6700HQ or 6820HK paired with a series 10 Nvidia GTX GPU are experiencing unusually high CPU temperatures, loud fan noise, CPU throttling and in some case thermal shutdown.

Repasting your CPU seems to alleviate the issue but this voids the warranty and you shouldn't have to do that on a premium machine anyways.

Apparently the issue is due to poor/defective pasting during the assembly of the laptop at the Dell factory. Most people are seeing that 1 or 2 cores are way hotter than the others. This seems to imply that the thermal paste was not applied properly at the factory and that 1 or 2 cores are not properly dissipating their heat through the heatsink.

This results in

1) unusually high fan noise even under light load (just loading a browser makes the fan spin very fast)

2) CPU throttling during gaming session affecting performance (CPU throttling at 2.7Ghz)

3) in the most extreme case this can lead to thermal shutdown (6820HK only)

We would like Dell to officially acknowledge our problem so please upvote this.

Hello,

As soon as I open a few windows in my browser, I get a popup that says "Memory insufficient - close some programs). And then my browsers crash all the time. Often the popup says the problem is with "Dell Premier Color" but not always.

How can I fix that? I though this laptop had so much RAM?

Number 6 Numeric Keypad not working

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspirion 5558 touchscreen Windows 10 device.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that the number 6 on the keypad to the right no longer works.  I have attempted to remove the keyboard to see if anything was underneath and didn't see anything.

There have been times when different key strokes would be followed by the number 6.  For instance, the letters 'c' and 'e' when typed in close succession in words like 'instance' or 'glance' the number 6 would appear.  This does not happen regularly though.

All other keys on the keypad work fine.

Please advise.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Roll over selects items as if clicked without user input

I bought a 3585 Inspiron I5 two weeks ago, I have maybe 10 hours on it, most spent trying to find a fix for a serious P.I.T.A.  A pause or slow roll over  a selection box, linked text or image and the item is selected and open without a click by me. Things get opened and closed which  have to be closed or reopened repeatedly. I"m not really sure if it is a Dell"s or a Windows configuration/ set up but.  NIETHER seems to have a word to say about the problem.  Both websites  are totally silent about. Search with Google returns 100's of hits on the problem. Back when I was a computer loaded with Windows 2.0 I had the same problem but that got fixed in 10 minutes with a easily located and easy to change setting on mouses install disk.  I am hoping that one of you nice folks can give a fix that is explained so a senile old Far# cat get this fixed.  THANKS IN  ADVANCE,  Roger

Second HDD in CD-ROM caddy

Hello,

I'm having problems with my WD blue 1TB HDD (which came originally with the laptop) being recognized using it in CD-ROM caddy.

I bought Dell Inspiron 17 5767 like a month ago, and of course I want to upgrade it with SSD (Samsung 850 EVO 256 GB), and then use original HDD instead of CD-ROM.

I already read the post: en.community.dell.com/.../19536697

I have Salcar caddy, which is proven good, already in previous 2 laptops, one HP and one Dell. Also the current one with this HDD was tested in older Dell and the disk is recognized and works superb. So from this I can conclude, the caddy and the disk are completely fine, something must be wrong on my new Dell side.

I upgraded BIOS (to 1.09), SATA and other drivers yesterday ... nothing changes.

The OS (on the SSD) is original as got from Dell, as the data was migrated with the Samsung utility from original HDD to SSD. Then HDD was formatted, currently has only one partition.

In BIOS I disabled Virtual machine and LAN boot settings, as they are not needed. Also, LPM is disabled, as suggested in other post. But still no change.

The HDD in caddy is not recognized in BIOS, nor Windows, nor Disk Management, nor CMD (diskpart).

I also tried to create smaller partition, about 850 GB, still not recognized. I didn't try with smaller than 750 GB, maybe should do this, but I don't believe this is a problem.

I bet there are other users out there with the same problems - did anyone got this working? Any other ideas what to try?

Did Dell give any official anouncement why this is not working with Inspirons (and on the other hand it works with other Dell recent models)?

Or is just simply true that Dell Inspiron and SDD as primary with HDD in CD-ROM caddy won't ever work? This would be such a shame for Dell ...

Please share your thoughts or ideas.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Fading sound on system speakers but sound is fine on headphones

I have a problem with audio on system speakers Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1. I have exhausted all my ideas.

The audio is fine through plugged in headset but through system speakers it starts loud and fades away to very faint audio coming from two speakers.Could this be some type of Auto volume control? This problem exists with ITunes with local media, DIRECTV, Slacker, YouTube.

This has existed through several W10 upgrades. I am on the latest W10. No updates available. I have used Dell Auto Update and verified through the website no other drivers are missing or outdated

With the deal Audio I restored to default, disabled equalizer, audio and microphone enhancement. No luck

I have removed audio devices from device manager rebooted to same results. Any other ideas?

Additional User and MS Account

New Inspiron 11.  Set up went well and I was able to set myself up as a user without a MS account.  I want to add another family member as another user, but it seems to require that they have a MS account.  How do I get around this?  Is there an advantage to both having a MS account? Thanks !!!

Using a Bamboo Solo stylus with Latitude 7275

$

I am trying to use a Bamboo Solo stylus with a Latitude 7275 in tablet mode without the slim keyboard attached, but it does not work evenly across the entire display.  If I draw looping circles on the screen, the line will be continuous and tracks the stylus until it reaches the middle right third of the screen where it skips sections of the line.  When I reach the upper right third, it drops the line completely.  I cannot tap on any menu options in the upper right or use the standard Windows close "X".  It all works fine with a fingertip, but I was hoping to use the stylus as a more natural drawing/writing tool.

The Solo has a soft carbon-fiber tip and apparently some internal magnets, but it otherwise a passive device.  It has no buttons or batteries.  I see Dell supports their Active Stylus product with this laptop, but I wanted something simpler.

I tried a different rubber-tip stylus and it seems better, but it also skips in some areas... more along the bottom.  It works intermittently in the upper right area where the Solo does nothing. The entire display still works fine with a fingertip.  Neither stylus works well, if at all when the slim keyboard is attached. I understand that may have something to do with the magnets used to attach the tablet portion.

Can anyone explain to me what's going on and why a portion of the screen is unresponsive to the stylus? Do I have a defective touchscreen or it just a design issue?  The Solo works great with my Android devices.

XPS 15 9550 +20 seconds BIOS bootup

$

I replied to some related threads but in order to bring this to the attention I make a new thread.

My XPS 15 9550  manufactured on October 2016 has a very slow BIOS bootup time.  It takes up to 22 seconds from pressing the power button to getting the Dell logo. This behavior existed with the factory BIOS (1.2.12) and is still there with the newest BIOS (1.2.18). Notice that simply restarting the laptop yields a BIOS bootup time of less than 5 seconds.

Specs: XPS 15 9550, Intel i7, 16GB Ram, 512GB Toshiba SSD, FHD 1080.

BIOS: 1.2.12, 1.2.18

Some of the things tried:

  • Disable USB Boot options
  • Disable UEFI
  • Disable SATA
  • Disable SupportAssist
  • Set POST bootup to minimal
  • Set POST bootup to 0 seconds
  • Set POST bootup to 5 seconds in order to see POST messages (got blank black screen instead of messages)
In the best case I managed to get 17 seconds which I still find unacceptable since
some extra time is spent at the Dell logo and then there is the OS bootup time as well. In total
this yields 27 seconds total bootup time which is crazy considering the premium price of the laptop.
Computers 5 years older were faster than that!

I am hoping this gets resolved fast since from what I have seen BIOS updates are quite frequent.

Dell Inspiron 7559 Won't Turn On

$

I have recently bought this laptop and have had it since the 21st of Dec 2016, and this morning I was watching a YouTube Video and all of a sudden my screen turned black, and at the top there was a sort of static on the screen, scared I quickly turned the laptop off (used to this as my old laptop that was really old kept doing these kinds of things and I was used to turning on and off to resolve things) But as I turned it on the lights on the keyboard turned on and the on switch did too, but the screen itself hadn't. After leaving it 10, 15, 20, 30 minutes it still hasn't done anything, and the ventilation hasn't turned on either, So honestly I have no idea what to do I've consulted to the internet, and Dell Support but everything leads me to using my laptop and updating stuff on my laptop which I cannot do. So I've resulted to just leaving my laptop on to wait for it to run out of battery to plug it on to see if anything works, but if not I'm surprised because it's a brand new laptop and has no reason to be broken. Please help I'm really worried....
