XPS 13 (L322X, Early 2013) Ubuntu crashing when under load

I have had continual crashing of my laptop and a bit lost on where to look and what to do.

It came originally loaded with Ubuntu 12.04 and upgraded to 14.04 to see if that fixed the issue.

People have been suggested it could be driver issues, but trying to work out if it is a driver issue and if there are possible updates to the drivers has been hard to identify. Especially when there seems to be no Dell utilities.

The crash normally occurs when the system is under load (ie running Netbeans and starting Tomcat/coming all code with maven etc). I also get the feeling that the machine hits 100% CPU and high load much easier compared to a work colleagues machine. Although sometimes it does crash on start up after logging in.

Nothing is appearing in Apport reports in the /var/crash directory.

I have had issues with the fan, where either noisy or not working at all and key board gets hot,  and I need to upgrade the bios to fix that issue (from V A09 to A10 I think). However I assume this is unrelated to the crashing.

Any help or tips on where to look would be much appreciated.

AFAIK I have not updated or changed any drivers since buying the machine 2 years ago.
