AC/DC Adapter wearing out?

Hi everyone,

I own a Dell XPS L502X laptop. Already since a few years my graphics card (Nvidia 540m) has been crashing on 3D applications, especially games. (Seems to be a pretty common problem)

I temporarily solved the apparently widespread problem by underclocking the GPU. However it's been getting worse and worse over time and I've been required to underclock the card more and more. Currently it's barely of any use anymore and close to the performance of an internal stock card.

Worth mentioning is the fact that when in battery mode the card can work on full load and without underclocking perfectly. Only if I plug the laptop in, it crashes withing 1-2 minutes.

Today someone told me that my AC power adapter is probably worn out and replacing it would fix the problem completely.

Is this true? I got no clue how the voltages and power supply aspect of a laptop work, so I figured I would ask here for help before trying to find a replacement.

Cheers

PS: My AC/DC Adapter is from the PA-4E Family
