Visual Studio 2013 not building solution when Laptop disconnected from docking station

I was recently given a new Dell Latitude E5540 that I have connected to a Dell E-Port Plus II docking station. When I'm in Visual Studio 2013 connected to the docking station everything works fine. But when I disconnect the laptop to work away from my desk Visual Studio starts saying "Not Responding", it basically freezes, does not build and hangs. If I put it back on the docking station while this happens it will work again just fine. I've tried shutting the computer down then disconnecting it from the docking station and same thing, restarting doesn't do anything. From what I can tell Visual Studio thinks it needs to be connected to the docking station to run and build properly. I've been looking on the interweb's and no luck, hoping someone here might have a clue? I'm going to try to uninstall VS then re-install it while its not connected to the docking station but I would prefer to put this off since that will take a days worth of time and there is no guarantee that this will solve the problem.
