Solved jumping cursor problem on my Dell Latitude e7440 Ultrabook

I suffered with the problem of a jumping cursor on my new Dell Latitude e7440 Ultrabook for 5 months before finally finding this forum and reading that this is a common problem with newer Dell computers.

I have used Dells for about 15 years and never had this problem with their prior laptops, but had it from the start with this Ultrabook. When I am typing, the cursor skips to some other place on the page than where I am typing, causing me to type in the wrong area.

I solved the problem by installing this touchpad driver:

Dell Multi-Touch Touchpad Driver, available at

 http://www.dell.com/support/home/il/en/ildhs1/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=WH62R

 Description:

 Dell Multi-Touch Touchpad Driver

This package provides the driver for Dell multi-touch touchpad and is supported on Latitude and Precision models running the following Windows operating systems: Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1

After the above driver was installed, I did this:

Double-click on the touchpad icon on bottom right of the screen (looks like a PC screen to me).

Click on “Tapping” (top right)

Uncheck Tap to Click

Click on “Back”

Pointer speed: Set to about 70% of the way to the right.

Touchguard (on bottom):

Click the “Turn On” box to enable Touchguard

Set Touchguard to half way.

Tradeoff: The further to the right you set the Touchguard, the more the touchpad will be suppressed during typing, but the longer it will take the touchpad cursor to appear/respond/move when you ask it to do so after typing something. 50% of the way to the right (i.e. in the middle) seems to work well.

Finally, after 5 months of agony with the jumping cursor problem, I have relief. The cursor does not jump around at all when I am typing now.
