Regarding my previous post, I was just lucky that the original Dell AC adapter worked. After unplugging it and plugging it back in, the battery charge light turned off and stayed off; it never came back on. I bought another cheep AC adapter for $10 via Amazon and plugged it in the D630 laptop and the battery light went on; the battery is charging. Conclusion: my adapter was degraded, it was able to power the laptop, but because the center conductor was invisibly damaged, it was unable to tell the laptop of its capabilities and therefore the laptop rejected it and would not permit it to charge the battery. A new AC adapter definitely solved the problem and there is a remote chance that the BIOS upgrade also helped; but I can't say for sure.
