I have only tried sleep mode by closing the lid, and this does not seem to work. I am not a big fan of hibernation so I never use it.
It's worth a shot, I haven't had any issues with high cpu since and my machine remains nice and quiet.
Again, this is with the process: SYSTEM. It consumes about 30% when my machine is "idle".
