Dell Latitude E6400 intermittently no video and chaotic POST response

0
0

I have acquired an used Dell Latitude E6400 laptop that has a weird problem.

A couple of times, all of a sudden the video faded away, and didn't come back for dozen power cycles. Screen/inverter/video chip were ok though, as colors displayed just fine when I press D + power. Also, when video faded away, all LEDs on the board turned off, except those on the back of the screen.

Also, another time, it didn't POST at all. When powered up, it would spin drive and fan for a few seconds and shut down, leaving some LEDs on (HDD + WiFi) for another few seconds, after which the LEDs turns off, flickering for a split second. A couple of times, after all that, it even kept blinking all 3 keyboard LEDs = System board error. This happened when on battery, AC or both, so I don't think si power source. I think is either the power circuit or the logic circuit on system board.

Right now the laptop is fine. It passed all diagnostic tests, and power cycles are working perfect. But I'm sure the issue will pop up again at some point.

This is most likely a motherboard issue, but I'm wondering if it can be fixed without board replacement, if a simple fix is applicable.

So I have a couple of questions about general hardware design of system boards:

1. Is this common behavior for BIOS chip failure?

2. Vaguely, what is the control path between BIOS software and the system board LEDs? What would cause them to flicker while nothing else would? Could corrupt BIOS cause that?

3. Are there separated power "rails" for CPU-HDD/video/etc and could one work without the other?

As you can tell, I'm having a hack at it and I'm attempting to do a guesstimate exclusion diagnosis.

Thanks

Dell Stole My Samsung m.2 850 250 GB SSD

I was told it would be fine to ship it as the OS files were on the drive. So without worry I sent it in with the SSD in case of testing purposes. Only to receive it with a multitude of problems.

Problem 1. I received an email saying the motherboard was replaced.

Problem 2. The paper that included what was done to the laptop did not mention a motherboard replacement.

Problem 3. I turned the laptop on only to find it self diagnosing, only to open it up and see the SSD gone.

Problem 4. I contacted dell and now am being told that it was received without the SSD.

Dell this is horse ***, either your employees misplaced it and did not put it back into the laptop after replacing the motherboard, or it was stolen by an employee.

I either want someone to find it, or to be reimbursed for your failure to keep track of it, and telling the truth.

Dear all,

I'm using a Dell Lattitude E5400 on windows 10 OS.

I couldn't find the Windows 10 drivers in the Dell website.

As I remember, this laptop was shipped with a Windows vista OS and a Vista CD.

Since, I can't find my CD, I tried to find the Vista OS in Dell website.

Couldn't find that as well.

Precision 7510-No USB port works-No driver found-Win7 Pro 64 bit

I have a refurbished Precision 7510 with Windows 7 64bit installed (UK warranty until May 2019).

NONE of the USB ports are recognised by the OS evn though each time a device is plugged in the device powers up. The OS does not respond AT ALL. Device manager reports that the Universal Serial bus controller has found no driver.

The Intel USB3.0 extensible host controller driver (ver 4.0.6.60) does not seem to work and CAN NOT be uninstalled from control panel or anywhere else.

This laptop must have worked at some stage as the same model is still on sale online with the same OS (AND a Windows 10 pro License included). Is there ANY WAY to roll back the drivers or install a factory fresh copy of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit (or Windows 10 Pro 64 bit if it's on offer) so that I have USB ports that actually work.

Also the Dell command update repeatedly installs the Intel rapid storage technology F6 (14.8.9.1053) and Intel management engine interface driver (11.0.0.1167) for some reason.

I am going to try and boot from a live usb image of Ubuntu 14.04 to see if the USB ports are recognised and actually functional.

I can suply my service tag if required.

Hi

My keyboard has non-backlit and I want a backlit keyboard.

Does the motherboard have a connector for it or am I stuck with the non-backlit version?

E5400 bios update

Dear all,

My Dell E5400's battery is not charging due to some reason.

I did a driver scan through Dell website and found an update E5400A17.exe.

Downloaded it as it seems that auto update is not working.

But, even when I run it manually, it says, that this bios update could not be run as there is 10% of battery.

I have connected my Dell laptop to a UPS. So I'm safe even on a power failure.

Could someone help me in overcoming this.

Computer not recognizing SSD in caddy

I recently replaced the CD/DVD optical drive in my Inspiron i14-3437-a40 with a new 240GB Kingston UV400 ssd drive in a caddy, but it's not being recognized at all by the computer. It does not appear neither in the BIOS nor in Device Manager/Disk Manager tools in Windows. The CD/DVD drive worked fine though, so I doubt it's an issue with the connector.  I have updated the SATA drivers and the BIOS using Dell's tool in the website, but apparently it was not a driver issue. What could be the reasons for this problem?

M4500 Bluetooth

I have a M4500 which did not come with Bluetooth and I installed a new Dell Bluetooth module a few years ago under XP. At the time I enabled the sleep function to conserve the battery when not using Bluetooth. I have since upgraded to Windows 7 and had a computer tech do a Windows10 install after replacing the hard drive. The sleep function has become a pain with turning off and the detection not working well under windows 10. I'm figuring it's a driver functionality issue since there is no updated Dell driver for Windows 10 I can find, and the driver installed in Windows 10 is listed as generic one and Windows reports it's the most recent one. I do not remember the exact model of the BT module and the Dell hardware detection tool does not work. Ultimately my problem is, I cannot change the properties of the Bluetooth in the device manager to keep the module on. When right clicking properties in device manager there is no popup. Figure that is another Windows 10 incompatibility with the module. Anyone know a work around to force the BT on and disable the BT from going to sleep while the computer is on?

XPS 13 9360 : connected standby often doesn't "sleep" !

On my brand new XPS 13 9360 / 16Go / 512 Go/ QHD+, "connected standby" is enabled by default.

The problem is that from time to time (but quite often), when I close the lid of my laptop, it continues to consume as much power as if I was using it, it doesn't really "sleep". The consequence is that it drains the battery and, additionally, if you put your XPS in a sleeve, it can overheat !

Do you experience the same problem ? How to fix it ? This is a major issue.
I have installed very few program so far and I'm basically only using edge.
Of course, this doesn't happen all the time, let's say approximately 1/4 of the times when I close the lid.

Finding charging solution for XPS 13 9360

0

Hello,

I'm currently traveling overseas in Israel and have lost my original charger and urgently need to find a way to charge the computer. (Dell XPS 13 9360)

I understand that I can also buy a USB-C charger, yet what do I need to make sure that it will work properly? The simple usb-c chargers for phones have too little a voltage (usually around 5 V)

Also, when looking for original dell chargers over here, what are the product names that I can look for?

Any Dell charger that is 19.5 V, 2.31 A and physically fits in the hole?

Would appreciate some help in guiding me to find any quick solution.

Thanks a lot

XPS 13 Kaby Lake - Frequent Crashes

I got the system about a month ago and over the past several weeks it has been crashing extremely frequently. Initially it would not resume from sleep, now if I let the screen time out, it will not wake up. I've tried windows updates, windows memory diagnostic and new WiFi drivers. One day it crashed 7 times as I was trying to figure out the problem. If I try and disable or update the Wifi driver after its connected to a network it BSODs. I disabled as much power managment as I could related to WiFi and it seems to have reduced the frequency of crashes, the crashes occur whether or not its plugged in.

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 20 3043 all-in-one computer and as soon as i turn it on im prompted with Enter Current Password. I called Dell and they gave me all they help they could and i still cant get passed the password. I've taken the hard drive out and booted it and it still says enter current password. I took the Cmos battery out and waited over an hour before replacing it thinking it would reset the password but it did not. Im out of options and my computer is a paper weight at this point. Is there any other solutions i can try to get passed this issue? Thanks!

XPS 13 9360 -- 1.2.3 BIOS results in 'no boot device found'

Dell XPS 13 9360, previously running dual boot Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS. After upgrading to 1.2.3 BIOS, the laptop fails to boot. I receive a BIOS message 'No boot device found'. This is using AHCI for the drive configuration.

If I change the drive configuration to RAID instead (and nothing else), I receive the error 'Inaccessible boot device' from Windows 10 -- which isn't hugely surprising as it's configured for AHCI and doesn't have the intel RST driver installed.

I've tried downgrading the BIOS to 1.0.7 but received a message 'Incompatible downgrade'.

Any ideas as to why it can "see" the boot device in RAID mode, but not in AHCI?
