Inspirion 5547 laptop right hinge is broken and warranty just ended a week ago after being repaired before.

I bought the Inspiron 5547 laptop from the Dell online website, Canada in December 2015. After sometime the "right hinge" started to give a cracking sound and had it repaired for "once" time. But the problem repeated for the second time , but this time the hinge completely opened up and now my warranty is over by a week. Every time I give it for repair I lose 2-3 weeks of work. If I had to move to repair centre continuously, there's no point of buying this laptop which makes it worthless. Several people has faced the same problem with the same laptop model. Spoke to an agent and he suggested me to either give for repair (which is disappointing) or talk to the store manager for a replacement of the laptop. Today , I talked to the store manager and he said that I don't have "accidental damage coverage" so they can only repair and not replace the laptop and said only Dell could help me. Then I called the customer service which was really frustrating. Been on call for nearly an hour and every time I get connected to a wrong department (got the transferred for 5 times). Then I've to start telling everything from the beginning (It really ***).. I don't have any "accidental damage" from the store and I've to pay for that (around $150) to get it repaired.. ***.. when that's a defect with several laptops of the same model.. Here is the link for reference for the same model of laptop.http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19622428?pi41097=1Attached are the pictures of the laptop with the problem. I've been with Dell from 2007 and have always been very much satisfied with Dell products. But this product ruined everything and avoids me from buying Dell laptop again. Customers with similar problem feel that Dell is using cheap plastic material to build the body. I kindly request you to take an appropriate action on such products and make the customers feel worth and also to provide me with a permanent solution.. Thank You..http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19622428?pi41097=1

Deployment issue with Latitude E7470 from SCCM 2012 OSD

Hi,

We are trying to install Windows 7 x64 on a Latitude E7470 with SCCM 2012 R2. We downloaded the CAB from Dell (en.community.dell.com/.../11830.latitude-e7470-windows-7-driver-pack) and created a driver package from this like we always do.

The TS fails right after the drivers for the system has been applied. When I press F8 and type IP config I see that it is getting a 169.x.x.x IP address. If I try to renew the address with "ipconfig /renew" it updates to a valid IP. I tried to add this to the TS and now it fails when the applications are about to be installed (error 0x80004005/unknown error). If I check the IP now it shows a valid IP.

We have no issues with all other Dell models we are installing.

I have tried with to E7470's to check if it was faulty hardware but it is the same on both machines.

Anyone else having trouble with this model?

Inspiron N5050 shows wrong hard drive capacity

I put a new 1tb hard drive in my Inspiron N5050 to replace the 500gb one. I moved all my content to the new hard drive using the repair disc and system image I made from the old hard drive. Now when I go into "computer" it still shows the 500gb (actually 468gb) hard drive not the 1tb hard drive. How do I get the computer to recognize the proper hard drive capacity? Sorry if I posted in the wrong place, I wasn't sure where to put this post since it could be in several places.

XPS13 / TB15 Charging

I purchased the XPS13 / TB15 (180W) for the docking capability / replacement of my desktop.  My configuration is the TB15 connected to 2 monitors, Ethernet, lighted keyboard, mouse, and speakers.

Having read many of the problems experienced with the TB15, I did the step-by-step driver installation prior to connecting the TB15.  The installation worked almost perfectly.  I did have a problem with the second monitor being identified, but a simple reconnect of the Display Port cable solved that problem.

My current problem with this configuration is that my XPS13's battery drains when connected.  It shows that it is plugged in, but the battery power still drains.  I thought perhaps this might have been that I have a 180W verses the 240W power adapter.  Thinking that there might be too much drain from the peripherals, I purchased an external USB 3.0 powered hub, but this did not help.  I still need to connect the regular power adapter to keep the XPS13 working.

My question is on the power adapter for the TB15.  Would the 240W adapted allow the XPS13 to charge when connected to the TB15?  After reading a Dell Linux forum, the TB connector has limited current, so the 180W/240W only make a difference with the connected peripherals, e.g. external hard drives.

Perhaps I am missing a Bios configuration to allow charging or some other software configuration.  Does anyone else have this problem?

Windows 10 installed JAN 2016 after hard disk replaced.  USB ports worked fine.

Dell BIOS Intel SGX Option not Enabling CPU Feature

Hello, I have recently purchased Precision 3510 laptops with the intention of using them for research on Intel's new Software Guard Extensions (SGX). These laptops come with the required CPUs that support these new CPU instructions and (we thought) the required BIOS support as well.

In the BIOS for the laptops, there is an option for enabling SGX, but when enabled we are not able to install any of the official Intel SDKs on Windows OR Linux. Additionally, we ran an SGX test program that would dynamically detect the SGX features using CPUID and Machine Specific Registers (MSRs). It successfully detected the SGX hardware support (i.e. the SGX instructions are physically on the CPU chip), but it showed that the BIOS flags controlling the startup of SGX were not enabled (possible SGX specific MSRs have not been set). The specific CPU flag that needs to be set is described here: https://github.com/ayeks/SGX-hardware . Here is a quote from that page that describes what is needed for SGX to work, "The CPU and the motherboard BIOS must support SGX. SGX is turned off by default and must enabled via MSR.IA32_Feature_Control.SGX_Enable. Only the BIOS can make changes to the IA32_Feature_Control".

For reference, we are using the latest BIOS version for our model - version A07. Also, the CPU we have is the Intel Core i5 - 6300HQ CPU @ 2.3GHz.

I hope we can resolve this issue in a timely manner as we are not able to use these laptops for their intended purpose (SGX research).

My computer is making a strange crackling/whirring noise. It happens especially frequently when I use the trackpad. I just bought it about 2 weeks ago and would prefer to not have to return it. Any solutions?

Inspiron M731R sometimes clicks no boot

But, it will likely boot after a power down or two.  Runs all Dell diagnostics fine.  S.M.A.R.T says it is healthy.  Full surface scan finds no problems.  I just installed Windows 10 over 8.1 with no problems, but the boot/clicking issue still occurs.

I've worked on LOTS of PC's, and clicking was always the kiss of death for the hard drive.  Never seen anything like this.  Hoping someone else has been there and fixed it.

Install BIOS update with less than 10% battery life

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this post.

So, my laptop (Alienware 17 R2) requires a BIOS update but I can't install it due to the fact that my battery isn't above 10%. My battery is fine and my adapter seems fine also but my laptop claims "plugged in, not charging". After doing some reading, the BIOS update can fix this.

I've done some other reading on how to install the BIOS update while overriding the message but I haven't gotten it to work. The closest I've got is using the /forceit in the command prompt but then I get a prompt that says invalid command.

If additional information is required, I'll do my best to supply it. I would really like this problem to be fixed. The support line was zero help....

My father recently passed away and while cleaning out his things I found a Dell laptop that doesn't look like it's been used much at all. There is a password on it though. Is there a way to bypass this or could someone guide me in resetting the computer to original settings? Looks like it's a Windows 7. Any help I would appreciate greatly, thank you

Hi,

my dell inspiron 14 7000 7437 says there's "no bootable device" unless I go to bios setup and restore it to default settings every time I boot up.

how do I fix it?

My OS is Windows 10 and I did a BIOS update hoping that it will fix the problem.

I also opened it up to check if there's any problems with the data ribbon to the SATA hard disk.

Everything seems to be ok.

How to search for drivers

Hello,

Whenever I search drivers by model, dell search offers overwhelming results. Something like chipset (10 files), network (15 files), video (8 files). That's just too much staff to download. And I need just one driver from each section. So, I try to find drivers specifically for current device using ServiceTag. However, this search gives only video (2 files). Where are chipset and network driver? Actually, after system reinstall, windows doesn't recognize none of network cards.

For business solutions I use cab files. But for Inspiron I need to find drivers by myself. How to find drivers for devices that I use?

I am not dell reseller or distributor. I am a regular person who wants to get drivers directly from Dell site.

Dell Wireless 1820A intermittent connection

I'm having an odd issue where every so often (maybe once every 2-3 hours) my XPS 13 9350 with Dell Wireless 1820A will stop opening new internet connections. I'm using Chrome and when this happens, attempting to link to a new page will quickly return a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET error.

At the moment, this problem seems to be resolvable by disconnecting from and then reconnecting to the wifi network I'm using. The really strange thing is that any downloads (HTTP, FTP, or BitTorrent) that I have in progress when the connection errors start occurring still finish and work fine. This led me to believe that this was perhaps a DNS error, but I've tried reaching pages via direct IP address, such as my router's config page, when this issue is happening, and they time out - "took too long to respond."

I have read that many other users are experiencing poor performance from the Dell Wireless 1820A card, so maybe this is part of that constellation of problems.

My setup details:

  • Dell XPS 13 9350-4007SLV
  • Dell Wireless 1820A 802.11ac
  • OS: Windows 10
  • Driver version: 1.555.0.0

Any idea what's causing this? Any ideas for a solution? Thanks for any help you can provide. Drew

Dell Vostro 1720 Fan Monitoring

For the last month I have been running down reasons why my fan is very active.
After Malwarebytes, virus checks & Dell Diagnostics.  Windows now updates, a virus/trojan has been eliminated.  Now the fan is much better behaved, mostly idling.
My last 'rundown' is Chrome Browser which seems to absorb cpu up to 75%, keeps MsMpSvc also at a high level and the fan intermittently works hard.
I googled HwInfo and, I understand there is a Dell fan monitoring problem that may be enabled by using the Dell interface.  I haven't been able to work out if my Dell will report fan speeds (I don't want to control them).

I downloaded HwInfo and I am pleasantly astounded at the enormous amount of information available.

Meandered through Google, found reference to monitoring fan speeds using Intel Extreme Tuning Utility, downloaded and it failed to install.

Intel core duo CPU P8700@2.53GHz, 4GB 800 MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Ram, NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS, 17" Widescreen WXGA+(1,440 x 900), HD 320GB (used 92GB) Serial ATA FFS (7,200 RPM), Wireless 802.11 a/g/DraftN mini card.

I would be grateful for any suggestions how to monitor the fan speed.
