Inability to update BIOS

0
0

Hey,

I have been facing an issue of my laptop displaying the "your charger type and wattage cannot be determined" message for quite some time now. After going through the Dell Support Centre pages, it appears like this is happening because of me not updating my BIOS version.

Right now, my laptop only works when the charger is plugged in, but it doesn't charge the laptop. The battery is currently at 0%.

When I try to run the download for the update on BIOS, the .exe file fails to run because I do not have the required minimum of 10% battery for BIOS to run.

Please help; I am a college student with exams soon and I need my laptop running normally asap.

Hi AlvinChan94,

Did you try BIOS update on the computer?

This can be software or a hardware issue. To isolate the issue check in a different user account.

Refer the following link which has information “How to create a user account”:

http://bit.ly/VNSBTb

Also, run diagnostics on the computer.Restart the computer by holding FN and power button. Let me know the status of diagnostics.

Awaiting your response!

Hi Christian S,

This could be a problem with the motherboard of the computer as even if you tried to replace memory the problem persists. Replacing the motherboard of computer will fix the problem.

In case the system has active warranty, please private message the system service tag, contact number and registered owner’s name. I would be glad to arrange for a replacement.

To private message, click my user name and click start conversation.
Check warranty status: http://dell.to/zEE2Cm

In case of expired warranty scenario, we would not be able to extend warranty entitled services.

If the warranty on the computer has expired, below link would help you in contacting expired warranty services (this is for US based customers):

Awaiting your response.

nickush,

Rajesh and I work as a team. I usually work and let Rajesh get back to you. Please contin ue with Rajesh unless the issue is corrected by using me advice below.

I joined the threads because you posted in two places. If prevents too many solutions.

Your 169.254 ip address tells me there is a problem with the router(s) communicating.

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

What happens?

Hi Awalker103,

Kindly check the option of Disable automatic restart. Now restart the computer and check if the computer restarts.

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
  2. Click Advanced system settings.
  3. Click the Advanced tab.
  4. In the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings.
  5. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box.

If the issue persists, I recommend using the computer in safe mode with networking (restart the computer and tap F8 on Dell logo and select safe mode with networking).

Check the behavior of computer in safe mode.

Awaiting your response!

Hello Gastonkhoo,

I apologize for the delay in response. Since the computer has an active warranty, I’d request you to private message me the system service tag number. To private message, click on my user name and click start conversation.

This issue is fixed with the newer BIOS, I am running the A11 version, yet the issue has been fixed since the A09 version. Please update your notebook BIOS.

I've already tried this twice but in vain.

Thanks for your informing about you and Rajesh & the related approach taken to solve this issue.

Hi SeeDeer,

Yes, you need to use the Windows operating system disk to boot. Please post the results for further help.

nickush,

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Did this just start happening? If yes, use system restore and go back to the first restore point before Tuesday April 9th, 2013. There was a Microsoft update that caused connection issues. See if that resolves the problem.

Re: Latitude E5420 Sata3 compatibility

The SATA controller in the Dell Latitude E5420 are SATA III. I have a Crucial C300 128 GB SATA III SSD installed in my E5420 with the Intel HM65 Sandy Bridge chipset and the read speed of my SSD tops at 370 MB/s in the ATTO 2.46 4K read test. This is clearly SATA 3 speed (a SATA II controller could not go beyond 285 MB/s in the SSD read test)

Besides, there are no SATA II or SATA III connectors. They are all the same. There aren't even SATA III cables, there also all the same. What does make the difference, is the the SATA controller. Old chipsets had SATA I or  II controllers and with the introduction of the Intel Sandy Bridge chipsets, the SATA controller now support SATA III 6.0 Gbps transfer (which is of course backwards compatible with SATA II and even SATA I).

DELL-Chinmay S

Hi lahi,

From the symptoms above, most likely it appears to be an issue with operating system of your computer. You may uninstall and re-install the drivers by following the steps in previous post. In case you are not able to locate the 'Device Manager', you may press Windows key + R --> Type ‘devmgmt.msc’ --> Hit Enter and then follow the steps.

In reference to system overheating issues, you may use a can of compressed air to clean the vents. Before you clean the air vents of system:

  1. Turn off the System.
  2. Unplug the AC Adapter.
  3. Remove the Battery.

For more information on cleaning the vents, please visit the following link: http://dell.to/SAep59 Once you clean the air vents, check if you face the same issue after that.

If the issue persists, you can update the BIOS to latest version.

Note: Make sure the ac adapter is connected and the battery is charged 10% or above to update the BIOS. Also, disconnect all the external peripherals before updating the BIOS. All the programs should be closed and documents saved.

Link to download BIOS: http://dell.to/QjjZDA

Enter the Service Tag of your computer --> select the operating system --> Go to “BIOS” --> Download and install by following onscreen instructions and check if the issue persists.

In reference to your query on creating recovery media, you do that on either USB storage device or DVD's.

Please share the findings.

hey mate if you can check this image for a second. I think my video card driver is missing. So how can i install it

Purchase Dell Warranty?

I have a guy who wants to sell me a new condition Dell M4600, but the warranty has expired.

Is there a way to purchase a new warranty for a computer whose warranty has already expired?

Do you recommend doing so? If Dell cannot provide a new warranty, would another provider, such as Square Trade be able to do so?

Laptop Inspiron N5030 Not Booting

Hello, My Inspiron N5030 Laptop won't boot it gets stuck after the Dell logo. Then a "_" sign appears at the top left corner of the screen and then it just hangs. I have already tried the Dell CD and run diagnostics with no problems found. Could it be a software issue or hardware as in malfunctioned hdd?

This is not a BIOS problem.  Try another Dell adapter - if that doesn't solve the problem, you will need to replace the power jack or the mainboard.

That's what I do. The plastic bits are so fragile they always break when I do that.
